ALBANY: PATAKI VETOES HUNT BILL Gov. George E. Pataki said yesterday that he had vetoed a bill that would have banned "canned hunts," in which people pay to shoot nonnative animals in enclosed areas. The action drew immediate criticism from some animal rights advocates. Governor Pataki "has aligned himself with the handful of unscrupulous individuals who would pay big bucks to shoot a zebra ambling up to a feed truck or a Corsican ram trapped in the corner of a fence," said Michael Markaria of the Fund for Animals, which is based in Maryland. Canned hunts are already banned when the animals are enclosed in a pen or a fenced-in area of 10 acres or less. Mr. Pataki said the bill would have applied to 110 larger hunting preserves and would have closed 340 deer and elk farms, many with hundreds of acres of rough and wooded terrain.
