"Just because they aren't using the information that way doesn't mean they couldn't," says NRA-ILA Executive Director James Jay Baker. He says Attorney General John Ashcroft's proposal to destroy records of lawful gun purchasers after one day is not merely a symbolic gesture, because it eliminates "a precursor to confiscation" that could allow the information to be compiled into a list of gun owners.
