NRA Statement on Heitkamp's Opposition to Trump's Supreme Court Nominee

FAIRFAX, Va. — Chris W. Cox, executive director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action, today released the following statement in response to Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s decision to vote against the confirmation of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee:

"Today, Heidi Heitkamp put partisan politics above the rights of law-abiding North Dakota gun owners. Right now, the U.S. Supreme Court is split 4-4 on the basic right to keep a firearm in the home for self-defense. Therefore, a vote against confirming Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is a vote against the fundamental right to self-defense.”

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America's oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. More than five million members strong, NRA continues to uphold the Second Amendment and advocates enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the armed services.
